Tatjana Smith gave South Africa its first gold of the Paris Olympic Games b adding the 100m breaststroke crown to the 200m title she won in Tokyo three years ago under her maiden name, Schoenmaker.
The podium was completed by China's World champion Tang Qianting and Mona McSharry, who gave Ireland its first Olympic medal since 1996 and its first-ever medal on breaststroke. From today, McSharry can be described as the last Irishwoman to excel in the Olympic pool - and that's a big cloud shifted for Ireland.
