Coetze Sets The First WR Of His Career: 22.09 - S/C 50 Backstroke
Pieter Coetze steals the Day 2 show in Tashkent, while Cameron McEvoy matches WR-holder Egor Kornev for a snap in the 100m freestyle, and Siobhan Haughey, Marrit Steenbergen and Mona McSharry lead the 900-points-plus wins among women
When Pieter Coetze, the 6ft 6 (197cm) South African, set his seventh African record today, it took him to a new level: in 22.09 a class apart in the 50m backstroke on day 2 at the Tashkent round of the short-course World Cup, also landed the first World record of his career.
The standard had stood at 22.11 since November 2022, to Kliment Koleshnikov, sixth today in Tashkent on 22.88 as the last of the 900-point-plus finishers.
Second at the turn to Egor Kornev (10.84), Coetze, the African standard bearer in the 100m backstroke both long- and short-course, broke his own African mark of 22.84 from four years ago by going out in 10.92, thundering home in 11.17, for his 1002-points 22.09. Kornev was closest, 0.2sec adrift.

Men's 100m Freestyle: Another Snap - McEvoy & Kornev On 45.24 Way Out Ahead
Just two men topped the 900-point mark, and then by some. Egor Kornev matched the World record last week in Baku, but today he was 0.4sec slower, while the Australian who won the 50m dash in both Baku and Tashkent, was 0.12sec faster than the best time he set in that same Baku race for second.
McEvoy was out a fraction faster today, Kornev a touch slower out, home faster than the Australian but not by enough to beat him:
- McEvoy: 21.42/23.82
- Kornev: 21.68/23.56
That gave them both 973 points, no others over 900:
