Whistleblower In Portuguese Swim Scandal Honoured With Anti-Corruption Award

Alexandra Jorge, whistleblower in the “Waterproof – Survival and Aquatic Preparedness” program scandal, has been awarded a prize for fighting for integrity and against corruption in Portugal.

The Tágides Prize (2024), an annual award given in various realms of society, was given to Jorge at a ceremony at Casa de Serralves, in Oporto. It honours those who"identify, recognize, celebrate and reward projects, works and initiatives of a person, a group of individuals or a business organization" who stand up for integrity and fight for the prevention of corruption.

Said Jorge, who exposed the reasons why Portugal's highest two authorities ordered (and approved) the Portuguese Swimming Federation (FPN) to dismiss Antonio José Silva as president of the FPN before the World Aquatics vice-president was re-elected to the throne of European Aquatics.

The sport's World and European Integrity Units have sat ion their hands despite Jorge extending her concerns to them. What had led to shame and a loss of mandate for Silva at home before elections last month confirmed Miguel Arrobas as the new president after a campaign against Silva's pick and right-hand man Rui Sardinhas, has yet too be acknowledged as problematic by so-called reformists in charge at global and continental levels in aquatics.

Legal obligation awaits new leadership: António Silva must be dismissed, by law, after an integrity inquiry found against then FPN president, head of European Aquatics & vice-president of World Aquatics. How now for their reform agendas?

Jorge is not done yet, Silva having lost a tribunal case that awarded costs against the FPN under the leadership of those who were voted down and out last month:

Tribunal Ends Attempts By Silva & Outgoing FPN Team To Delay His Dismissal In Integrity Dispute
Latest ruling is likely to lead to the reopening of a complaint against Silva placed on ice by the Aquatics Integrity Unit in January after attempts to further delay an order for the FPN to dismiss Silva were thrown out due to the “supervening futility of the dispute”

On her integrity and ani-corruption award, Jorge said:

“It is with great pride and gratitude that I receive the Tágides 2024 Award in the Local Initiative category from @all_4_integrity, as an anti-corruption award. This recognition celebrates the values that move me: ethics, transparency and sporting truth. A merit shared with everyone who believes in this path and contributes to a more honest and fair future. Thank you very much!”
