"Gutted". It was among the most prolific words used to describe how the swimming community felt about Ben Proud's decision to abandon the sport in which he excelled as Olympic silver medallist, World, European and Commonwealth champion in a tested environment designed to deliver as close as one can get to clean sport.

What Ben did not understand but may, hopefully, one day come to appreciate when the money's in the bank (no figure been put on his move as yet, the incentive $1m upwards come the doping-friendly event next May with just a few sprint events, so no incentives for the vast majority of swimmers at this stage) and he has time to contemplate consequence ...
