W200 Back: McKeown Matches Egerszegi & Joins Matthes In Back-To-Back Double-Double Club
McKeown's four golds elevate her to the pantheon of international legends. Asked if she's ever imagine achieving that, she said: "Not in a million years. Growing up, I've always just idolised you know, my sister and Emily Seebohm, training alongside Emma McKeon .. and being friends with Mollie
Kaylee McKeown delivered parity for women in the club of back-to-back double-double Olympic backstroke aces when she retained the 200m backstroke title in an Olympic record of 2:03.73 to add to the 100m crown she kept on her head earlier in the week here at the Paris Olympics.
Australians, understandably, were running around calling their champion the first Dolphin to double down on a pair of victories by repeating the feat at the next Games. But McKeown, coached by Michael Bohl, is bigger than that.
In doing the double-double, she joined legend Roland Matthes as the only other swimmer ever to win the 100 and 200m titles at two Olympics.
McKeown also drew level with Hungarian legend Krisztina Egerszegi, who also claimed four olympic backstroke golds, one in the 100m, three over 200m that made her the second member of the Triple Crown club founded by Aussie living legend Dawn Fraser in 1964. Illustrious company.
