After Commonwealth Games, the numbers did not lie: the combined share of medals won by Britain's home nations in Glasgow in July was the lowest since the 1990s before Bill Sweetenham arrived to rescue a tanker all but on the rocks, Sydney 2000 the first Olympics at which Great Britain emerged from the pool with no medals at all. So, this was the picture coming out of Glasgow before of the home nations reunited as Great Britain bound for its 2026 benchmark meet in Paris:

And at that benchmark championship, a much better picture emerged for Great Britain. The overall share of medals for the Brits was black to the encouraging point at which Sweetenham had catapulted Great Britain too by 2006, though 20 years ago, GBR's 13 medals, topped by 2 golds (the third highest total medals among nations after a draw for Italy and France on 15 each) won from a program five events smaller than in 2026. Atop the 2026 tally of 14 medals, there were eight golds, the most of any nation, for No1 on the medals table, and of the 8 gold and 14 total included just one of the new events introduced in the past decade (the mixed 4x200 free):

They called the rise from a challenging Glasgow to the "incredibly positive" outcome" of Paris the "Britain Bounce", which is where I began in a sit-down behind the scenes at the pool in Paris with GBR head coach Steve Tigg, to whom the words in quotes in this sentence belong.
