The Vortex - August 2025: Otopeni World Juniors Conclude With 11 Finals, Erisman's Tally Up To 5 Golds & 8 Podiums
World Juniors concluded in Otopeni, Romania, this evening, with American Rylee Erisman taking her tally of podiums to eight, five golds in the mix; Japan's Mizuki Hirai is the first woman at Juniors to race inside 57sec over 100 'fly; and Ireland's John Shortt makes it a backstroke double

The following are the results from the last day of the World Juniors Championships in Otopeni, Romania, where 11 finals were contested. If each one had a good story in the mix, it would take a minimum of 5,000 words to tell it in a way that told you, the swimming reader, more than you can tell for yourself by reading the result sheets, and so, given that 11 finals are deemed reasonable scheduling, here is the way we'll tell the story this day:
Japan’s Mizuki Hirai became the first woman at World Juniors ever to race inside 57sec over 100m butterfly, her 56.87sec victory by 0.87sec over American Audrey Derivaux, one of the multi-gold-medal-winners of the week, took down the 57.03sec standard she sent in her semi-final yesterday.
Among men, Kuzey Tuncelli clocked 14:48 in the 1500m free to make is a distance double with both the 800 and 1500m titles retained for Turkey, and John Shortt, of Ireland, made it a backstroke double by adding the 200m crown to his 100m title, his efforts among the outstanding swims of the championships.
Eight Podiums For Erisman

The concluding medley relays saw Japan keep Great Britain at bay by just 0.02sec for the men’s crown, while the USA took the women’s title, Rylee Erisman adding that title, 50 free gold and 200 free silver in one session for a championship tally of 5 gold and 3 silvers. Her solo count was two golds, in the 50 and 100m free, and a silver, 200m free, all other honours won in relays.
That helped the USA top the medals table with 10 golds, 6 silvers and 6 bronzes for 22 medals in all, Japan closest on overall medals, with 18. Great Britain finished third overall, with 15 medals: 3 gold, 7 silvers and 5 bronzes, the last weekend also featuring gold for Dean Fearns in the 50 'fly, silver for Jacob Mills in the 100m free, and bronze for Blythe Kinsman in the 50 back (see reports from other days below).
The meet did not reflect the strength of nations at senior level, Australia’s sole medal a gold, the junior Dolphins joint 12th on the table with four other nations.
