Steenbergen's Double Dutch Gold In European Record Times: 200IM Then 200 Free

Marritt Steenbergen, of The Netherlands, rose to all-time No2 by taking down Katinka Hosszu's 2017 ER in the 100m medley & was back less than 90 minutes later to take down Sarah Sjöström's 2017 ER & Federica Pellegrini's meet mark from 2009 in the 200m free in Lublin

Marritt Steenbergen, of The Netherlands, claimed double-Dutch gold in the 100m medley and 200m freestyle finals less than an hour and a half apart on day 3 at the European short-course championships in Poland this evening.

First up, she took 100IM gold in 56.26, taking down Katinka Hosszu's 2017 European record (then also a World record), as well as the the championship mark set by the Hungarian in 2015 on the way to triple gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Steenbergen's new pace elevated her from 7th to 2nd fastest all-time.

She was joined in the club of all-time top 10 risers by Belgium's Roos Vanotterdijk, second in Lublin in a national record of 56.80, up from 8th to 6th all-time with a big leap from a best of 57.41. Bronze went to Israel's Anastasia Gorbenko, who also set a national record, her 57.17 catapulting her from 24th all-time to No8.

Less than 90 minutes later, Steenbergen was lining up for a shot at a second crown on the day: It was delivered in 1:50.33, 0.1sec inside the European record sent by Sweden's Sarah Sjöström back in 2017 a year after she became the first woman from her country to claim Olympic gold in the pool, with victory in the 100m butterfly, a silver also win at the same Rio 2016 Games in the 2100m freestyle. Eight years on in Paris, Sjöström would add Olympic golds in the 50 and 100m freestyle.

In the little pool in Lublin today, Steenbergen led from go to gold in a time that also set a meet mark inside the standards set by Italian 200m free queen Federica Pellegrini in shiny suit back in 2009.

All of which also lifted Steenbergen from 22nd all-time on 1:52.28, past the Dutch record of Femke Heemskerk (1:51.69) and all the way up to all-time No3.

Silver was 1.14sec shy of the Dutch sprinter, ion the ape off Hungary's Minna Abraham, the bronze to Britain's Freya Colbert:


Ponti Progresses From 2023 Silver to 2025 Gold

In the men's 100m medley final, Noe Ponti improved on his silver from 2023 for gold in a championship record of 50.52, just shy of his Swiss record of 50.33 but inside the shiny suit meet mark set back in 2009 by Slovenia's Peter Mankoc.

The silver went to France's Maxime Grousset in 50.53, bronze to Austria's Heiko Gigler in 51.60.

Britain's Lauren Cox and Oliver Morgan led the way to the 100m backstroke finals:

The pace-setters in the 200m breaststroke semi-finals were led by Ireland's Ella McCartney and Spain's Carles Coll Marti.
