There was a time not too long ago when the average age of women winning Olympic titles in the Olympic pool struggled to get out of the teens but the first two finals here in Paris tonight brought us the oldest sprinter and the oldest distance swimmer ever to claim swimming gold at the Games.

So, let's hear it for Sarah Sjöström, Olympic champion in the 100m freestyle at 30, and Katie Ledecky, Olympic champion in the 1500m freestyle at 27.

Are they the G.O.A.T.s of either end of the sprint-to-distance spectrum? On many levels, the answer is yes.
