Shed No Tears For The Menace Maduro, But Scribble Down 'LA2028 B Plan' If Echo Of 1980s Reaches Greenland
A grab-and-go raid in Venezuela held hands with more naked imperialist ambition on Greenland this week. Seen from Olympic Heights, any move on European-held territory risks mass boycott of the 2028 Games. Is there an alternative plan?
A tale of two regime changes, viewed from Olympic Heights, 1979-80, and 2025-26:
- It was around Christmas time, under cover of the festive season, that Soviet troops invaded Afghanistan in 1979, their aim to stabilise the communist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) by removing the unpopular President Hafizullah Amin and installing a more compliant leader, Babrak Karmal.
On December 27, 1979, Amin was assassinated. Why? Well, among reasons:
- he ordered thousands of fellow Afghans to be executed on the basis they disagreed, and many of those he sent to their deaths disappeared without trace during his short time in office
- his overtures to the USA, in search of better relations, collapsed when Adolph Dubs, also known as Spike Dubs and an American diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to Afghanistan from May 13, 1978, was murdered on February 14, 1979 during a rescue attempt after his kidnapping earlier that same morning. A U.S. plea for authorities to wait before responding to the crisis, in order not to endanger Dubs' life, was disregarded by Afghan police, who attacked the kidnappers at the hotel where Dubs wa being held. That action was taken on the advice of Soviet officers. The weapons and flak jackets used by the Afghans were provided by the Soviets, multiple Soviet officials were in the hotel lobby, including the KGB security chief, the lead Soviet advisor to the Afghan police, and a Soviet embassy official. Dubs was killed in the gunfire that ensued.
- That same year, the Soviet Union, under Leonid Brezhnev, came to distrust Amin after he conducted a series of purges against the Parcham, the more moderate socialist faction of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) led by Karmal ...
Regime change triggered the invasion that would then trigger Olympic boycott in 1980.
- It was at the turn of the year, under cover of auld lang syne and the darker meaning of times long gone when imperialism and spheres of influence held sway before a time of democracy governed by the rule of law, that American forces invaded Venezuela, seized its illegitimate President and his wife and swept them off for trial in the United States.
The raider in chief, holding a position that had previously been informally known as 'leader of the free world', Donald Trump then announced that the USA would "run Venezuela".
And then he made some fresh imperialist remarks about running Greenland, too...
