Great Britain has selected 28 swimmers for the World Championships in Singapore this summer, Olympic gold medallists of Tokyo 2020ne and Paris 2024, Tom Dean, Duncan Scott, Matt Richards, James Guy and Jack McMillan, leading the squad along with Paris silver medallist Ben Proud.

The team list has one big name missing: Olympic Champion of Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020ne Adam Peaty, who made clear last November in an interview with me for The Times that were he to opt back into to preparing for the fast lane, Singapore Worlds would "very likely" not be a part of his schedule back to full throttle. Peaty confirmed he would aim for LA2028 after the IOC confirmed that 50m sprint events on backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, would join the Olympic program in 2028, 40 years after the freestyle dash was added:

The fastest sprint breaststroke swimmer all-time, Britain’s Adam Peaty welcomed news that confirmed he will train and race on to LA2028. “Huge, huge, huge news, I’ll be there,” Peaty posted within minutes of hearing the news.

The team selected by Aquatics GB blends big-podium players with several cycles of experience with a new wave of hose who made their Olympic debuts in Paris last year, together with a ripple of newcomers to global senior representation.

Aquatics GB notes that Duncan Scott, Matt Richards, James Guy and Ben Proud all claimed British titles last week [at nationals in London], and "are bound for busy meets in Singapore come July", while Tom Dean and Jack McMillan - part of the 4x200m freestyle quartet that retained the Olympic crown for Britain, will also race in Singapore.

Eight others who claimed national titles in London are among those selected after having raced inside the selection target times. Angharad Evans and Oliver Morgan, who both broke national records in 100m racing, she ion breaststroke, he on backstroke, are joined on the list by fellow champions and Olympians Keanna MacInnes, Freya Colbert, Eva Okaro, Max Litchfield, Katie Shanahan and Abbie Wood.

Evans and Okaro will make their Worlds debuts in Singapore, as will Greg Butler, Leah Schlosshan, Ed Mildred and 17-year-old Jacob Mills, who claimed silvers in the 50m free, behind Ben Proud, and he 100m free, behind Matt Richards, at nationals.

Aquatics GB swimming Head Coach Steven Tigg will work with the following coaching staff in Singapore:

  • Lisa Bates, Chelsea & Westminster Swimming Club
  • Scott Goadby, Loughborough Performance Centre
  • Bradley Hay, University of Stirling
  • David Hemmings, Loughborough Performance Centre
  • Ben Higson, University of Stirling
  • Ryan Livingstone, Manchester Performance Centre
  • David McNulty, Bath Performance Centre

Relays will play a key part in Britain's campaign, Performance Director Chris Spice noted, adding:

"We were treated to a week of top-quality racing at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships, with so many Worlds selection times met and countless finals going down to the very last strokes. It is always a pleasure to see events being moved on as well, so a special mention to Angharad Evans and Oliver Morgan for their respective British records, which bode really well for the season ahead.
"This is an exciting team that genuinely combines world-class experience in the sport's biggest arenas with a host of up-and-coming talents who we hope can gain invaluable insight in the summer, both in terms of competition but also being around our athletes and staff in a World Championship environment. As always, the focus for everyone involved is on delivering a season's best performance in the summer, and everything we do between now and late July will be working towards that.
"Seeing how swimmers like Jacob Mills, Max Morgan and Holly McGill delivered in front of packed crowds and a TV audience at the London Aquatics Centre last week means they are already on the right track to do that. Equally, it is always promising to see the way our experienced big hitters, including Duncan Scott, Matt Richards and Abbie Wood, were able to show their class and perform strongly after some well-deserved breaks post-Paris, and that is encouraging in terms this summer, our ongoing relay prospects and the longer-term picture over the next Olympic cycle."
