Qin Cited As Saying Western 'Plot' Will Make China Try To 'Win More Medals & Silence Doubters'
“The tests come early in the morning before we’re even awake, during midday rest periods, forcing us to rest on hotel lobby sofas, and even late at night, keeping us up past midnight.” - China team staffer
Qin Haiyang, a contender for gold in both breaststroke events at the Paris Olympics, has been cited as saying that allegations of cheating in the ranks of China's top swimmers are part of a “European and American” plot that has made him and his teammates more determined to "win more medals and silence the doubters!"
Qin was one of 23 Chinese swimmers, 13 of whom are in Paris at the Games, who tested positive for the banned heart booster trimetazidine (TMZ) in January 2021 but were cleared by their national anti-doping agency without challenge from global anti-doping and swimming authorities on grounds that they felt "mass contamination" was the likely cause.
Since then, he has been largely silent but Chinese social media posts quoting interviews Qin has given from Paris indicate that the triple World champion is highly critical of targeted anti-doping tests the Chinese have faced "at all times of day and night" in the east month.
