The 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive for a banned heart booster in January 2021 did not all stay in the same hotel where alleged mass contamination in a single kitchen led global anti-doping bosses to clear the athletes of wrongdoing and stamp the file confidential.
The claim is made in a new documentary from the same Doping Investigations Unit at German broadcaster ARD that broke the story of the 2021 cases in April this year.
Although the work considers much wider revelations and challenges in the realm of cheating with banned substances and methods in sport, the twist in the Chinese 23-go-free story calls into question the official version of events from China that led to the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) and World Aquatics declaring all 28 positive tests from 23 swimmers "no fault" cases.
