Johnny Weissmuller was born on June 2, 1904, in Freidorf, then a part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, but today a district in Timisoara, Romania.

The son of Catholic and Jewish parents, Petrus Weissmuller and Elisabeth Kersch, he was registered as Peter John Weissmuller. Of Hungarian and German ancestry, he was baptised Janos Weissmuller. He would become one of the most dominant sprinters in the pool, remains among the best-known swimmers in history and goes down in history as one of the greatest forces for spreading the swimming wold to the wider world.
