Irish History Maker Shortt Sets World Junior Record For First Senior Gold Of Career
The 1:47.89 World junior record in the 200m backstroke also means that Shortt is now also the European junior and European senior championship record holder. Neither the international standards Shortt set nor the title he won today have ever been owned by an Irishman before
John Shortt added the first senior international championship title of his career to his four global and continental junior titles when he set a 1:47.89 World Junior record for gold in the 200m backstroke on day 2 at the European s/c Championships in Lublin this evening.
Neither the international standards Shortt set nor the title he won today has even been owned by an Irishman before.
Last of the eight finalists at the first turn, Galway 18-year-old Shortt, coached by John Szaranek at the National Centre Limerick, put himself in contention in third place a length later and then spent the next 100m as the closest shadow of French pace-setter Mewen Tomac.
Day 2 finals also witnessed a championship record of 1:02.82 in the women's 100m breaststroke, Estonia's Eneli Jefimova stopping the clock less than half a second outside the World record.
That story and a wrap of all finals and semi-final highlights follow...
