Gold was never in doubt but margins of pioneering dash speed are tricky things: on a sizzling 10.99 at the turn, Gretchen Walsh was on course to set her third World record in the 50m butterfly at the World Short-Course Championships in just two days in Budapest.

A whisker faster out was followed by a fraction slower back, and by a Bondian 0.07, the American fell just shy of her pioneering pace in semis yesterday, the title her's in 24.01.

On a day that witnessed a World-record victory in the men's 'fly dash final for Swiss sprinter Noè Ponti, Walsh emerged from her victory with the three speediest efforts all-time among women.
